영어공부는 애써 하는 것도 필요하지만, 일상적으로 영어와 접촉하고, 친근감을 느끼고 즐기는 것도  중요하다고 생각한다. 세계의 명언들을 통하여 영어를 즐기고, 명언에서 배우는 재미도 있었으면 좋겠다.

여기에 소개하는 성경번역은『한영스터디성경』（생명의 말씀사, 2004년）에 의거하면서 필요에 따라서 나의 말로 바꾸었다.

               The Wife of Noble Character
  
A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.
Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.
She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.
She selects wool and flax
and works with eager hands,
She is like the merchant ships,
bringing her food from afar.
She gets up while it is still dark;
she provide food for her family
and portions for her servant girls.
She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks.
She sees that her trading is profitable,
and her lamp does not go out at night.
In her hand she holds the distaff
and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
She opens her arms to the poor
and extends her hands to the needy.
When it is snows, she has no fear for her household;
for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
She makes coverings for her bed;
she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
Her husband is respected at the city gate,
where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sell them,
and supplies with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come.
She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction in on her tongue.
She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praise her;
“Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.”
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
Give her the reward she has earned,
and her works bring her praise at the city gate.

             현숙한 아내
 
누가 현숙한 여인를 얻겠느냐?
그 값은 붉은 보석보다 더하느리라.
그런 여인의 남편은 그를 믿나니
아무런 부족함이 없으리라.
그녀는 살아가는 동안 남편에게
좋은 일을 가져다 줄지언정 결코 해치지 않을 것이오니,
그녀는 양털과 삼을 구하여
부지런히 가공하여
장사군의 배와 같아서
먼 곳에서 양식을 구해오며,
밤이 새기전에 일어나서 집 사람들에게
먹을 것을 나누어주며, 여종에게 일을 정해줄지어다.
그녀는 밭을 잘 살펴서 사들여
벌어들인 돈으로 포도밭을 가꿀지어다.
그녀는 팔을 놀려 힘겹게 일하며,
자기하는 일의 이익함을 깨달아
밤에 등불을 끄지 아니하고,
손으로 솜뭉치를 들고 손가락으로 물레가락을 잡으며,
가난한 자를 어루만지고 힘든 자에게 손을 내민다. 
그 집 사람들은 다 두터운 주홍색 옷을 입고있으니 눈이 와도 근심이 없으며,
그녀는 자기 침상을 잘 가꾸고, 질 좋은 아마포와 자주색 옷을 입으며,
그녀의 남편은 그 땅의 장로들과 더불어 성문에 앉아 뭇사람들의 존경을 받을지어다.
그녀는 베로 질좋고 품위 있는 옷과 띠를 지어 장사군에 넘기며,
다가오는 날들을 걱정하지 않느니라.
그녀는 지혜롭게 얘기를 하고,
신용을 어기는 일이 없느니라.
그녀는 집 안 일을 잘 보살피고 게을리 얻은 양식은 먹지 아니하며,
그녀의 자식들은 일어날 때마다 어미를 축복하고,
그녀의 남편은 칭찬하기를
“덕행있는 여자가 많으나 그대는 누구보다 뛰어난다” 하느니라.
미모도 믿을 바 못되고, 아름다움도 퇴색을 하는 법이거니
오직 여호와를 경외하는 여자는 칭찬을 받을 것이리라.
그녀가 노력하여 얻은 것은 다 그녀에게로 돌아갈 것이요,
그녀가 한 일들은 성문에서 칭찬이 자자하리라.
 

(134)                           Ask, Seek, Knock
 
  Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
For everyone who ask receivers; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?
If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

                          구하라, 찾으라, 두드리라
 
구하라, 그러면 너희에게 주실 것이요, 찾으라, 그러면 찾을 것이요, 문을 두드리라, 그러면 너희에게 열릴 것이니라.
구하는 이마다 얻을 것이요, 찾는 이마다 찾을 것이요, 두드리는 이에게 열릴 것이니라.
너희 중에 누가 아들이 빵을 달라하면 돌을 주며, 생선을 달라하면 뱀을 주겠느냐?
너희가 악한 자라도 좋은 것으로 자식에게 줄줄 알거든, 하물며 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지(하느님)께서 구하는 자에게 좋은 것으로 주시지 않겠느냐!
그러므로 무엇이든지 남에게 대접을 받고저 하면 너희도 남을 대접하라. 이것인즉 율법이요, 하느님의 계시이니라.
